The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team picked up two points in a National Collegiate Hockey Conference game against Colorado College on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena, but things could have turned out much better for the Fighting Hawks. Brock Boeser’s shootout goal gave UND the extra point in a game that will go down in the books as a 5-5 tie, but the Fighting Hawks surrendered a 4-0 first-period lead before battling back to force the game into overtime. Freshman center Rhett Gardner scored his second goal of the game with goalie Matt Hrynkiw pulled for a sixth attacker with just 32 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at 5-5 all. Also scoring goals for UND (19-3-3 overall, 10-2-1 NCHC) were Luke Johnson (two) and Coltyn Sanderson. Scoring for CC (5-17-1 overall, 3-9-1 NCHC) were Hunter Fejes (2), Luc Gerdes, Christian Heil and Trey Bradley. Hrynkiw, who relieved starting goalie Cam Johnson in the second period, finished the game with 10 saves. Johnson had eight saves while giving up three goals. Goalie Tyler Marble had 25 saves in relief of CC starter Jacob Nehama, who had eight saves and gave up three goals in just over nine minutes of play. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
