Grand Forks Red River’s boys high school hockey team did something that no other North Dakota team has done in almost 50 years: The Roughriders finished the season undefeated — 27-0 — and along the way won their 17th state title by defeating Bismarck High 4-3 on Saturday night in the championship game of the North Dakota Boys High School Hockey Tournament in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The last North Dakota team to go undefeated was Grand Forks Central in 1967 with a 22-0 record. Tourney Most Valuable Player Mason Salquist led the Riders with two goals and an assist. Tony Haley and Mitch Soderberg also scored for Red River. Eric Plasson scored all three goals for the Demons, who finished the season 23-4. Jacob Melhoff had 22 saves in goal for Red River while Josh Bring and Hunter Lauer combined for 23 saves for Bismarck. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
