The University of North Dakota clinched its second straight National Collegiate Hockey Conference championship and Penrose Cup with an 8-1 win over Western Michigan University on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. The Fighting Sioux were paced by its top line of Brock Boeser, Nick Schmaltz and Drake Caggiula. Boeser had two goals and two assists, Schmaltz had his second four-point game (goal, 3 assists) of the season, while Caggiula had one assist for a nine-point game for the CBS line. Coltyn Sanderson and lineman Chris Wilke also scored two goals for UND, 27-5-3 overall and 18-4-1 in the NCHC. Paul LaDue scored other UND goal. Sheldon Dries scored WMU’s lone goal. Fighting Sioux goalie Cam Johnson stopped 31 shots, while WMU’s Trevor Gorsuch and Lukas Hafner combined for 27 saves. The two teams meet again tonight. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
