The University of North Dakota’s Shane Gersich took a page out the playbook of Chicago Black Hawks star Patrick Kane on Friday night in a game against the Fighting Hawks National Collegiate Hockey Conference rival Denver University. Gersich scoring a stunning spin-o-rama goal — a move Kane is know for — before a packed Ralph Engelstad Arena while the two teams skated three-on-three in overtime. The game goes down officially as a 1-1 tie, but the goal earned the Fighting Hawks (5-3-2 overall) two of three possible points in league standings and now an 0-2-1-1 NCHC record. The Fighting Hawks, ranked sixth nationally, had broken a scoreless tie early in the third period on a goal by Cole Smith before Henrik Borgstrom of the No. 2-ranked Pioneers (6-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 in NCHC) tied the game with just over five minutes remaining in the period to send the contest into overtime. UND goalie Cam Johnson stopped 24 shots, while Denver’s netminder Tanner Jaillet had 29 saves. The two teams meet again tonight. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
