The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team quest for a ninth national championship was cut short Saturday night in Fargo’s Scheels Arena as the Fighting Hawks were defeated 3-2 by the University of Minnesota-Duluth in a five-overtime game. North Dakota (22-6-1) trailed 2-0 late in the third period before pulling goalie Adam Scheel and tying it up on goals by Collin Adams and Jordan Kawaguch just 44 seconds to send the game into overtime. The game was scoreless after two periods before Jackson Cates and Cole Koepke scored to put the Bulldogs (15-10-2) up 2-0. Luke Mylymok scored the winner just 2:13 into the fifth overtime. Scheel had 51 saves in goal for UND, while UMD’s Zach Stejskal stopped 57 shots before he had to leave the game with leg cramps, replaced by sophomore Ryan Fanti, who stopped all six shots he faced. UMD will face the University of Massachusetts in the Frozen Four semifinals April 8. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
