The intransigence of the GOP leaders to move forward with a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol is the height of party over politics. It is a glaring example of what is broken in our government. The Republicans were given everything they asked for in negotiations, including equal representation and power, and when they got it, they refused to take yes for an answer.
Mitch McConnell asked senators to vote against it as a “personal favor” to him. How about honoring their commitment to preserve and protect the Constitution? Their first loyalty should be to our country, not him.
On this Memorial Day weekend, in honor of the courage of those who gave their all to protect our nation, we should hold all political leaders accountable for their cowardice in investigating the riot and cause of the attack in January. What are they afraid of, the truth? If so, then all the more reason to get to the bottom of what happened that day and why.
The truth, perhaps, will keep us free.
