I remember the seismic shift that happened in a week five years ago when the pandemic began. Our world completely transformed in a matter of days.
A similar seismic shift has occurred in the past week, with the shift in world order. The U.S. has gone from being on the side of democracy, standing up for the values that led us to fight with the Allies in World War II, to standing with war criminals and murderers, as this administration repeats Russian talking points.
Put simply, if this were 1941, with what is being said by the U.S. administration, we would be fighting with the Axis powers and standing with Hitler.
Oh how I wish I was being extreme. Every fiber of my being wishes I thought I was overreacting. But I am a student of history, with a degree in German, and I know I am not.
The rhetoric blaming Ukraine for a hostile neighbor invading and then calling him a dictator, all couched in lies and Russian propaganda, makes Neville Chamberlain’s capitulation to Hitler look like child’s play.
Putin is a cold-blooded killer with no moral compass and pure evil running through his veins. And the United States is now allied with him over NATO, who came to our defense after 9/11.
In the eyes of the world, in a matter of a week, we have gone from being “the great city on the hill” to being part of the “Axis of Evil.” Ronald Reagan is rolling over in his grave.
And when you add to this the claim by President Trump ON THE WHITE HOUSE WEBSITE that he is a king, this is the greatest shift in our democracy in history.
What men and women fought and died for is being shred into pieces.
True conservatives know this is wrong. It is the antithesis of everything their party represented for years. And only their voices, along with the voices of every true patriot who cares about what this country represents, will stop this.
I can’t imagine anyone I know who may have voted for Trump, who believes that we should be standing with Vladimir Putin. It’s OK to say this isn’t what you wanted. In fact, that may be the only thing that saves our nation because turning it off or tuning it out will lead us further down the road to perdition.
