July 25: Not many better places to laze away a Sunday afternoon — Lake Harriet in Minneapolis yesterday. Best weather in a couple of weeks, two free concerts, easy access to beer and snacks, magnificent floral gardens nearby, Minnesota nice folks who chatted with us while admiring our dog Pixie (who also enjoyed the day immensely).
July 20: A hummingbird visited us in the late afternoon yesterday at our place in Bloomington, Minn.
July 19: There may be some nasty weather headed our way later in Bloomington, Minn., but conditions were perfect on the deck tonight. Dorette Kerian and I flashed back to our 2010 retirement sabbatical in southern France, not far from the Italian border. There, we often enjoyed Caprese salads with French bread and, of course, “beaucoup de vin.” Pic shot with my iPhone.
July 17: Among the benefits of living in our part of Bloomington, Minn., is the nearby weekly summer Farmer’s Market, seen yesterday. The focus is fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, but, among other goodies, one can also find a terrific, less healthy polish sausage hot off the grill.
July 16: I shot this i-Phone pic on the Blue Line light rail train last night as we returned to Bloomington from a concert at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. Seventy-five cents each way — we generally prefer it to driving a car to downtown. Most of our fellow passengers were Minnesota Twins fans, still in a good mood despite yet another loss.
July 13: Guess who just came home from the groomer with a new summer hair cut? Yup, Pixie did!
July 11: Wait if you wish, Dave, but there are storm warnings out there. I’m taking cover under this chair, right now.
July 10: Flag at half-staff in honor of the police officers murdered in Dallas, seen yesterday from the outdoor plaza of Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
July 9: One of the delights of living in the Twin Cities is the “Sommerfest” concerts at Orchestra Hall, conducted for many years by Andrew Litton while Osmo Vanksa takes a summer break. Tonight, Dorette Kerian and I will be there to hear a bit of Rachmaninoff and Brahms.
July 7: My favorite WCCO Television reporter and frequent anchor is Heather Brown. I took this picture yesterday in downtown Minneapolis while Dorette and I were strolling after the Twins game. She’s a graduate of Colgate University with tons of journalistic experience. Here Heather is doing one of her recurring person in the street interviews, seeking answers to “good questions” submitted by viewers. She follows up by interviewing an expert in a relevant field.
July 6: Game under way. Go Twins! Sitting in nosebleed country but not complaining.
July 6: The viewing stand at Kelly’s Slough National Wildlife Refuge west of Grand Forks, N.D., photographed last week. The picture scarcely does justice to the scene — it was incredibly lush and green that day with dramatic clouds in a spectacular sky. I’ll return this fall to observe the snow geese pausing to feed and rest on their 3,000-mile migration south. When these noble white birds reach the slough, they’ve already flown half the distance to their winter nesting grounds in the southern U.S. and Mexico.

July 1: As I often do when I’m in Grand Forks, N.D., I recently had lunch at the Mexican Village. I first dined there in the 1960s as a student at the University of North Dakota. At the time, Hispanic food was still rare in most of the U.S. On Wednesday, I ordered this superb burrito and chips for just $6.59. I also flashed back to college days when, after a movie at the Empire Theater, I once splurged by taking my date to this restaurant. She also thought the food was great. My liberal political views? She thought I was an idiot. Lesson learned? Avoid certain topics if there’s any chance whatsoever of pitching some woo.

Great photos. We are hoping to move to that area soon if we can find a one level townhouse or condo to our liking and sell our home in EGF. We have seen some nice condos in Bloominton with beautiful grounds but the HOAs were so high. These photos are good motivation to get busy getting our house ready to list and to keep looking for the right place.
