The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team is heading back to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Frozen Faceoff next weekend in Minneapolis. Trevor Olson’s goal 7:38 into overtime lifted the Fighting Hawks (20-14-3) to a 6-5 win over St. Cloud State University (16-19-1) on Saturday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. North Dakota on the first game in the best-of-three series Friday night. UND will play either Denver University or the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Friday in Target Center. Austin Poganski, Tyson Jost, Brock Boeser, Shane Gersich and Christian Wolanin scored the other goals for the Fighting Hawks, who recorded their 15th straight season of 20 or more wins. Nick Poehling and Grand Forks Red River’s Jon Lizotte scored twice and Patrick Newell once for the Huskies, whose season ended with the loss. North Dakota goalie Cam Johnson had 30 saves, while SCSU’s Jeff Smith stopped 35 shots. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
