The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team secured fourth place and gained home ice for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoffs with a 2-2 tie with St. Cloud State University on Saturday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Fighting Hawks (14-12-10 overall, 8-10-6 NCHC) picked up the extra point when Rhett Gardner scored just over four minutes into 3-3 overtime and will host the University of Nebraska-Omaha next weekend in the first round of the playoffs. The Huskies (22-6-6 overall, 16-4-4 NCHC), who finished in first place, will host Miami of Ohio. Gardner and Grant Mishmash scored regulation goals for UND, while Ryan Poehling and Grand Forks Red River product Jacob Benson scored for St. Cloud. UND goalie Cam Johnson, one of four seniors honored before the game — along with Gardner, Trevor Olson and Johnny Simonson — stopped 23 shots. SCSU goaltender David Hrenak had 29 saves.
