Sunday was a big day for University of North Dakota women’s softball coach Jordan Stevens. Not only did his Fighting Hawks team clinch a spot in the Summit League Softball Tournament in Fargo in two weeks with a 7-1 win over South Dakota State University at Apollo Sports Complex in Grand Forks, Stevens also claimed his 100th career win at UND, becoming only the second head coach to accomplish the feat in program history. UND (21-31 overall, 6-9 Summit) had help from North Dakota State University, which swept the University of Nebraska-Omaha, enabling the Fighting Hawks to gain the playoffs. SDSU (32-14 overall, 9-6 Summit) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Fighting Hawks tied the game in the first and took the lead for good in the second inning. Leading UND at the plate were Jailene Carpio (2-2), Dani Romero (2-3) and Lexi Mayhood (home run). Pitcher Emily Rosas picked up the win. Three UND players — Deja Miller, Lyndsay Hathaway and Marina Marzolino — were honored on Senior Day at the game. It was also Bring Your Dog to the Park Day. UND returns to play next weekend with a three-game series against the Bison in Fargo. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
