DAVE VORLAND: It Occurs To Me — Powerful Exhibition

Dorette and I devoted part of Wednesday to visiting the Minneapolis Institute of Art. We accomplished our main goal of seeing MIA’s new exhibition, “Artists Respond: American Art and the Vietnam War: 1965–1975.” The artwork was organized by and is on loan from the Smithsonian’s American Art collection in Washington, D.C.

Above is my iPhone picture of one of the paintings, by Dominick Di Meo. Yup, that’s an image of President Lyndon Johnson.

The exhibition will run through January 5. We highly recommend it.

On a personal note, I was in college in Chicago when I received my draft notice. I showed up at the induction center but failed the physical exam (I’m legally blind in my left eye). I felt no joy in being rejected. Several friends and a cousin died in the conflict and others returned physically and emotionally scarred.

Anyway, if you are in or get to the Twin Cities, put the exhibition on your must list.
