Our new political system has America in disarray

Tom Engelhardt has written a history of the Cold War, runs TomDispatch.com and is co-founder of the American Empire Project. His latest musings are about a new kind of government being born “right before our eyes.”

“Let me make my case, however, minimally, based on five areas in which at least the fain outlines of that new system seem to be emerging: political campaigns and elections; the privatization of Washington through the marriage of the corporation and the state; the de-legitimization of our traditional system of governance; the empowerment of the national security state as an untouchable fourth branch of government; and the demobilization of “we the people.”

Why do people obsess about the PDX airport carpet?

Portland’s airport carpeting, which is 27 years old, is being replaced. And that has Oregon residents who are encouraged to be weird (they are) in a sort of tizzy. Which begs the question why do people have such deep feelings for nostalgia in the first place?

New fabric could revolutionize what you wear outdoors

A small Colorado company named Voormi has developed a waterproof breathable fabric consisting of only one layer. The company says its waterproof membrane is thinner and less bulky than current (and really expensive) rain gear on the market.
