A successful penalty shot by sophomore Austin Poganski — his third of the season — in overtime lifted the University of North Dakota men’s hockey team to a 2-1 victory over visiting University of Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The win came less than a week after the Fighting Hawks were swept by Denver University in National Collegiate Hockey Association series in the Mile High City. UND, which maintained its tie for first place in the league and also clinched home ice for the NCHC quarterfinals beginning March 11, upped its record to 23-5-3 overall and 14-4-1 in the NCHC with the victory. Also scoring for UND was senior Coltyn Sanderson, his third goal of the season. Scoring the lone goal for UMD, 11-13-5 overall and 7-9-3 in the NCHC, was Dom Toninato. UND sophomore goalie Cam Johnson had 32 saves, while the Bulldogs’ Kasimir Kaskisuo had 23. The two teams meet again tonight. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
